Every time we return from Hawaii, we always talk about living there, until we remember that our family is all on the East Coast. This time, we spoke about staying for a month, instead of just 2 weeks. Every time we go to Hawaii, we feel like we are coming home!
If you are lucky enough to be in the Hawaiian Islands in December, you might feel some of the holiday joy as well. With the holiday displays in the hotels to the special programs, here are some things to do in Hawaii during December that might make you feel like you are home for the holidays!

Mochi Pounding at Akiko’s Buddhist Bed and Breakfast
Join the 16th Annual Mochi Pounding – Saturday , December 28th, 2013 Time: 8AM-1PM, in Wailea town (15 minutes north of Hilo on the Big Island). Locals and visitors gather to make Japanese rice cakes the old-fashioned way. Crafts, floral arrangements, plantation stories, taiko drumming, a local-style lunch and Hawaiian entertainment add to the festivities.
If you are on the Big Island check out the 14-foot-tall Christmas tree made of coconuts. On Dec. 21, guestsof the hotel, as well as non guests, can attend a tree lighting ceremony hosted by one of the resort’s beach club ambassadors.
Crafts Fair and Tree Lighting at Hilton Waikoloa Village
From Nov. 30 – Dec. 1, join in for the 19th annual Na Lima Hana crafts fair in the hotel’s convention center showcases Hawaiian quilts, carvings, ornaments, jewelry, clothing and gifts. The Dec. 6 tree lighting ceremony includes carolers, hula dancers, Christmas cookies and a visit from Santa. The Hilton Waikoloa Village in on the Kona Kohala coast of the Big Island.
Planetarium Show at Imiloa Astronomy Center
A holiday show and modern retelling of the Christmas story is scheduled for Dec. 13 in the planetarium called “Mystery of the Christmas Star”. It offers a possible scientific explanation for the twinkling light that the three wise men followed to reach the baby Jesus. www.imiloahawaii.org
Christmas Parade in Kailua-Kona
Head down to Kailua-Kona on Dec. 14 for this 29th annual cascade of entertainment through town. Check out the marching bands in aloha shirts, hula girls with tinsel leis, sugarplum fairies on roller skates and dogs dressed like reindeer. And if it gets too warm, members of the county fire department crowds cool off the crowds with fire hoses. www.paradesinkona.com
Caroling and Crafts at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel
On Christmas day, the Courtyard by Marriott (King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel) honors the holidays with a day-long Hawaiian crafts fair, caroling in the lobby and daily dinner specials in the Honu’s on the Beach restaurant. A special edition of its traditional Hawaiian luau takes place on Dec. 25. www.konabeachhotel.com
Christmas Gift Fair in Hilo
Stop by the Na Makua Invitational Christmas gift fair at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on December 6 and 7 to purchase products crafted by local artists and gifts not available elsewhere. There is also live entertainment, local food and drawings for prizes. www.namakua.com
