When My Vacation Lady sends honeymooners and other clients to Kauai, we send them a drop box folder full of great tips– what to see, do and experience, best beaches, driving itineraries, restaurant recommendations and more.  One thing we never recommended before is taking a Shelter Dog on a Field Trip.  You may ask what that is all about so let me tell you a bit about what Laura and John did during their honeymoon in Kauai.

with their humane society dog

In Kauai we drove through Waimea Canyon and we did the 8 mile hike to Hanakapiai Falls. In Kauai, we also went to the Kauai Humane Society and took a dog out on a “field trip” for the day. We were able to pick the dog we wanted to take out and we took her on the Mahaulepu Beach hike. It was such a cool experience. We had so much fun with her and it was so nice to get her out for the day.

This activity may not be for everyone but for pet lovers, or for those who are missing their furry friends back home, this is a fun thing to do for a few hours during your stay in Kauai.  You’ll get to pick the pup that you want to spend some time with, who will be dressed up in an adopt me vest and you can take them for the day to some really fun dog friendly places.

Dog-friendly places to visit include

Mahaulepu Beach, Poipu
Kalapaki Beach, Lihue
Sleeping Giant, Wailua
Moalepe Trail, Wailua
Wailua Abroretum, Wailua
Koke’e State Park/Waimea Canyon

Most beaches allow dogs unless they are county-maintained beaches or parks. Kapa’a Beach Path is the only exception.

There are some rules

Guidelines

  • Participant must be at least 18 years old.
  • Liability waiver must be signed.
  • Your credit card number will be recorded for a $200 deposit in the event the dog is not returned.
  • Dogs must be in an enclosed vehicle (no riding in an open convertible or in the open bed of a truck).
  • Dogs must be on leash at all times. Dogs are not allowed off-leash or in any dog park.

But other than that, have some fun with your dog for the day.  Be careful, you may end up coming home with a new pet— about 2 dogs a week are adopted and sent home to the mainland with their new families.
