Zika is in the news again. This time, it is being actively transmitted in southern Florida. For the first time in as long as we can remember, the CDC has issue a warning for pregnant women to avoid those 2 counties in Florida that have cases of Zika.
More and more, My Vacation Lady is receiving requests for Zika free vacation and honeymoon destinations. Well, the list is getting smaller. As of Aug 5, 2016, even our “safe” beach destinations have made the CDC list of countries where you should practice enhanced precautions.
Right now, the only beach destinations currently not on the list are the Bahamas and Bermuda and even that can change. Most recently, Antigua and Turks and Caicos were added to the list.
Other destinations listed on the CDC’s website are:
- American Samoa
- Federated State of Micronesia
- Marshall Islands
- New Caledonia
- Papua, New Guinea
- Cape Verde
This is what the CDC has to say right now about the destinations listed above:
Local mosquito transmission of Zika virus infection (Zika) has been reported… Local mosquito transmission means that mosquitoes in the area are infected with Zika virus and are spreading it to people.
The CDC is recommending the use of mosquito repellent and due to the possibility of sexual transmission, the use of condoms or abstinence is recommended.
So what if you are pregnant or trying to conceive:
- First and foremost, speak to your personal physician. My Vacation Lady is NOT qualified to tell you where you should or shouldn’t travel. Neither is any other non medical professional, including the media, including TV, newspapers and social media.
According to the CDC website, for women who are trying to conceive, this is the suggested time frame:
So the past rumors of waiting between 1-4 years before trying to conceive, are just that- rumors.
- Include Travel Insurance with your vacation or honeymoon package. The best kind will be a CANCEL FOR ANY REASON travel insurance (offered by some travel suppliers) or a 3rd party travel insurance company (like Travel Guard or Travel Insured), that offers a cancel for any reason optional benefit.
My Vacation Lady will never advise our clients to travel to destinations where they are not comfortable traveling. Unfortunately, the list of tropical beach destinations that are currently Zika free are shrinking. We have been busy this entire year, so far, helping out clients plan their vacations and honeymoons and if Zika is of concern, we can help find you a destination where you will feel comfortable.
