It’s already November 9. Have you used up all of your vacation days?
The majority of US employees don’t take all of the vacation time that they are entitled to. With technology blurring the lines between work and home, even when some of us are on vacation, we may not be completely on vacation, but rather tethered to our computers or phones.
So how can you make sure you use all the time you’re entitled to?
1. PLAN EARLY
For those who have to bid for vacation time, the earlier you make plans the better. In one company that I used to work for, those employees with the most seniority would always get their first choice of weeks and the newest employees would have to settle for what was left over. If you put in your request for time off, as soon as you are able to, you may have a better chance of getting the time off you want.
2. PUT SOMEONE IN CHARGE OF VACATION PLANNING
If you are not the kind of person who is good at making plans, put another family member in charge of getting vacation plans in order. After talking about your budget and dreams, have 1 designated person get the ball rolling and book your vacation.
3. SAVE IN ADVANCE FOR VACATIONS
If you’re not comfortable putting your vacations on your credit card, start a vacation fund. Believe it or not, banks do have things called Vacation Savings Accounts (just like Christmas accounts) or just open a new savings account and start putting money into it weekly. If you go away in less peak seasons, your vacation savings will go a lot further
4. BREAK UP YOUR VACATION TIME INTO A LONGER VACATION AND THEN SOME LONG WEEKENDS
If you don’t think you can afford more than 1 major vacation a year, lock in the time for your longer vacation and then schedule time off around some longer weekends. Taking a few Fridays-Mondays off and doing some fun stuff locally doesn’t have to cost a lot but can also help you rejuvenate a bit.
5. DON’T GO IT ALONE
For those busy professionals, who never seem to take all of their vacation time, hire a travel professional who can help you plan and book vacations that you’ll enjoy. Rather than spending your hard earned money on a resort that looked great online or going to a destination that isn’t what you were hoping for, a good travel professional can help design stress free vacation.
