Santorini is known for some of the most romantic sunsets in the world and this is one of the reasons why it is a top honeymoon destination. The real amazement is that Santorini is even more gorgeous than the picture-postcards of this island. Like an enormous crescent, Santorini surrounds the pure blue waters of its caldera, the crater of an ancient volcano. The hotels are built into the cliffside with views of the sea and make for breathtaking and romantic views. This is the pure essence of a romantic honeymoon destination.
If you arrive in Santorini by ferry, you’ll realize that you are arriving in someplace unique.
Its two principal towns are Fira and Oia both of which sit at the summit of the caldera. Fira has a fabulous location on the edge of the caldera overlooking the blue waters. Even if you think you’ve looked at the view a million times, glance again because it’s one you’ll never get tired of. If you are in Santorini during the peak summer season, you may feel that this small island is overwhelmed by cruise passengers trying to cram in everything they can into their short port stay. Head out to Fira in the later afternoon or early evening and it will be a different town than the one crowded with the cruisers.
Oia is probably the town voted as the most beautiful village in Santorini. This village has 2 streets– one with traffic and the more inland pedestrian lane, that is paved with marble and lined with shops, tavernas and bars. Even if you aren’t staying in Oia, plan on being there in the early evening to stake out your spot at a cliffside restaurant and stay for the sunset. It is definitely worth the wait!
Akrotiri is a town destroyed by a volcano eruption of 3600 or so years ago but was miraculously preserved under layers of lava. It is speculated that this is the actually the city of Atlantis, a mythical city lost in time. Combine a visit to Akrotiri with a visit to some of the islands wineries to sample the different wines produced in Greece.
Some other great honeymoon experiences are a combination of a winery visit with a cooking class or a sailing cruise. If you go in the morning, you can snorkel in the caldera. If you go later, you’ll be able to see the famous Santorini sunsets from the sea.
