A number of European countries, especially Italy and Geece, are experiencing unprecedented high temperatures.

Here are a few reminders to take into account if you are traveling there.

    • Many locations in Europe are NOT air conditioned because they don’t typically get extremely hot weather in most areas. This includes many hotels. Air conditioning is just not the norm as it is in the USA.
    • Their air conditioning in general is not as strong as what we find in the USA.
    • If your room is too hot, check with the front desk to see if the air conditioning is working properly in their room, or if they can provide them with a portable fan.

Here are some recommendations on how to keep cool

  • Avoid the mid-day heat by using that time to visit museums and other large indoor venues that may be more likely to be air-conditioned. Or follow the habits of many locals who will nap or “siesta” in the afternoon and dine later in the evening when things are cooler.
  • Look for outdoor shaded venues when stopping into restaurants and cafes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Drink plenty of liquids (we mean water and not alcohol) and eat lighter foods.
  • Take cool showers to lower body heat.
  • Wear cotton or linen clothing, skimp the denim or leggings.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses
  • Use a cooling neck gaiter (while not a fashion statement, it will cool you down)
  • Find a nearby water activity such as a beach, lake, or pool. The hotel front desk can help point them in the right direction.
  • Enjoy the local ice cream, gelato or cold treats that are so delightful in Europe.
