Recently, clients of My Vacation Lady  booked their honeymoon to Hawaii.  When we were talking about the room category that were available, they told us:

We heard from one of our friends who recently went on their honeymoon to Hawaii, that they booked the Four Seasons Maui at the cheapest room, and then were able to call them and get a complimentary upgrade to a suite, and they made it seem like this was fairly common, because people always book the cheapest room, and the hotel overbooks those rooms.
My Vacation Lady ALWAYS suggests that our honeymoon couples book the type of room that they will be happy in.  If they get upgraded, it will be a wonderful surprise and if they don’t, they will have the view and room category that they wanted in the first place.
We sent this question to our sales contacts at a number of resort chains in the Hawaiian Islands and the responses were all pretty similar:

Our Four Seasons’ Sales contact advised us:

to book the room your clients wish to end up in so that they are not disappointed.  Although we try very hard to upgrade our guests, there are times that high occupancy levels does not allow us to do so.

Our Marriott Sales contact recommended:

The most one can expect is the best room available in the category booked or a possible one category upgrade based on availability at time of check in!
As exclusive travel advisors participating in the Hyatt Prive collection, we do have some access to room upgrades in some of the Hyatt properties world wide.  Among the properties in Hawaii are the Andaz Maui, the Grand Hyatt Kauai and more.  We will be able to confirm those upgrades before your arrival and possibly offer some additional amenities for you.
My Vacation Lady is a Hawaii Destination Specialist as well as the Top Rated Honeymoon Specialist located in New Jersey on both Wedding Wire and the Knot.  We have some great contacts in many of the Hawaii resorts and in many cases, our honeymooners will get upgraded amenities or room categories or the best room within the category that they booked.

We will contact the hotel on your behalf and request any complimentary upgrades but even with our best contacts, upgrades can’t be guaranteed.  Chances of a complimentary upgrade from the entry level room to a suite is like winning the lottery.  I hope my client’s friends bought some tickets after that upgrade.
