How can we best describe Kauai?
The sheer beauty of Kauai is its playground. Evenings are quiet with a variety of entertainment, including great dining, luaus, music, sports bars and more but don’t expect the glitz and glamour of the big city here. You’ll spend your days filled with outdoor adventure, sun and fun and you’ll be ready for a nice relaxing evening. This is beauty at its best!
Before My Vacation Lady went to Kauai for the first time, our clients had been telling us that Kauai was their favorite island and they wished that they spent more time there. Since we have been to Hawaii numerous times, and we love all of the islands for different reasons, we still think of Kauai as our favorite.
So what is there to do and see and experience in Kauai?
Besides the beaches, here are some of our favorite things to see and do and experience in Kauai:
1. Waimea Canyon- considered to be the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. With lots of scenic overlooks and photo ops, as well as great hiking trails, you can easily spend an entire day within Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park.
2. Wailua Falls- for those of us old enough to remember Fantasy Island on TV, this was the waterfalls shown in the opening scene. You can see the falls from the road and it’s just an easy drive from almost anywhere on the island.
3. Mahaulepu Heritage Trail – just minutes from the parking lot of Shipwreck Beach and just beyond the beach of the Grand Hyatt, this hike is an easy hike that provides you with beautiful views of the sand dune cliffs, tide pools and the south shore of Kauai.
4. Visiting the Napali Coast- accessible only by boat or by foot, this 12 mile coastline has been formed by years of erosion to the sea cliffs. Take a snorkeling excursion and you might be able to snorkel into one of the caves or take a sunset dinner cruise and you’ll still see the beauty of the Napali Coast. If you are more active, put on your hiking books and grab a water bottle or 2 and start hiking. If you hike for 2 miles (of the 11 mile trail) you’ll reach Hanakapiai Beach. You can take another trail to a fantastic waterfall or turn around and head back—but remember, this is not for novices.
5. Explore the beaches along the North Shore – there are lots before it ends at Ke’e Beach. Last time we were there, a monk seal was just dozing on the beach.
