Most people don’t think of the Caribbean as a huge shopping destination but trust us, you can do some serious holiday shopping in many of the Caribbean Islands.
So in addition to fun in the sun, great beaches and beautiful resorts, another great reason to visit the Caribbean is duty free shopping!
In this article by CaribbeanJournal.com, they list 5 cities chock full of shopping opportunities. I think they missed the mark and left out some pretty big shopping islands.
Their top choice was Aruba.
Yes, we do love Aruba too and the shopping is great. Downtown Oranjestad is a top spot to shop for cruise ship passengers and tourists staying on the island. Yes, they hit the mark on this one.
Next, Old Sand Juan, Puerto Rico– again, we agree that this is a top shopping town.
Nassau, Bahamas– can’t go to Nassau without a stop at the Straw Market which is now back in business in a new location. As one of the most popular cruise ports we also agree with this one.
Basseterre, St Kitts— sorry but I can’t imagine that this tiny town beats out Georgetown, Grand Cayman or Phillipsburg, St Martin. Sorry, but I think they missed the mark on this shopping town.
Of course, Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas— likely the queen of duty free shopping with scores of jewelry stores alone, in addition to hundreds of shops along the main street of town. For those who are cruising, this is the port that racks in the liquor sales with great prices on almost any brand of liquor you want.
If you’re a shopping fanatic, which is your favorite Caribbean island to shop?
